What structured data is and why it matters
Structured data is a description of a page written in a shared vocabulary, schema.org, that Google, Bing and most AI search tools understand. Google recommends the JSON-LD format: a block of code that sits apart from the visible text, so it is easy to add and maintain. With it you tell a search engine, in plain terms, that a page is about a $349 product that is in stock, a clinic open Monday through Friday, or an article written by a named author.
The practical upside is eligibility for rich results: price and availability, breadcrumbs, event details and more. Eligible does not mean guaranteed. Google decides what to display based on page quality and the query, and it can change which types it supports. Schema markup is not a direct ranking factor, but it helps engines read your content correctly, which may matter more as AI-generated answers become common.
How to use the generator
- Pick the type that describes the main content of the page: the company, a location, a product, an article or an event.
- Fill in the fields. Those marked “required” are needed for Google’s rich results; “recommended” ones improve your chances.
- Watch the validation list: red means something essential is missing, yellow means it could be better.
- Copy the code and paste it into the matching page. After publishing, run the URL through the Rich Results Test.
Which schema type should you choose?
- Organization on the home page or the About page: company name, logo, contact details and official profiles (
sameAs). - LocalBusiness for businesses with a location open to the public. Choose the most specific subtype (Dentist, AutoRepair, Restaurant). It pairs naturally with a local SEO strategy.
- Product on every product page, with a real price, currency and availability. It is essential for ecommerce SEO.
- Article / BlogPosting on posts, with author, publish and update dates. A clearly identified author supports E-E-A-T.
- BreadcrumbList on inner pages, to show where the page sits in your site structure.
Common mistakes
- Markup for content that is not on the page. Prices, reviews and questions in the schema must also be visible to visitors. Otherwise you risk a manual action from Google (a structured data spam penalty).
- Reviews about your own business. According to Google's documentation, self-serving reviews on LocalBusiness and Organization markup are not eligible for star ratings in search results.
- Relative URLs or blocked images. Use full addresses (https://...) and make sure crawlers can fetch the images.
- The same code on every page. Product or FAQ markup belongs only on the page it describes.
- Ambiguous prices. A value like 1.299 can mean one thousand two hundred ninety-nine or one point two nine nine. Type 1299 or 1299.00 when in doubt; the generator will warn you.
Structured data and AI search
ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI features mostly read pages as text, and structured data can back up the key facts: who you are, where you are, what you sell and at what price. Consistency is what counts. Use the same name, address and phone number in your schema, on your site and in your external profiles. For a step-by-step walkthrough of the format, read our guide to schema.org and JSON-LD, then check the rest of your setup with the robots.txt and llms.txt generator.
Frequently asked questions
Structured data FAQ
Where do I put the generated JSON-LD?
Paste it into the HTML of the page, preferably in the <head>, though it also works in the <body>. In WordPress you can use a header-scripts plugin or your theme's custom code field; on a static site, add it to the file directly. Put each schema type only on the page it describes: Product markup on the product page, FAQ markup on the page that shows those questions.
Does structured data improve my Google rankings?
Not directly: schema.org markup is not a ranking factor on its own. It helps search engines understand the page and can make it eligible for rich results (price, availability, breadcrumbs), which may earn more clicks. Google decides whether to show them, even when the code is perfectly valid.
Is FAQPage markup still worth adding?
According to Google's documentation, FAQ rich results have been limited since August 2023 to well-known government and health sites, and that policy can change. The markup is still valid schema.org and describes your questions and answers clearly to search engines and AI assistants. The text must be visible on the page too. For the bigger picture, see our guide to appearing in AI answers.
Should I choose Organization or LocalBusiness?
If customers visit a physical location (a clinic, shop, garage or restaurant), use LocalBusiness with the most specific subtype available. For businesses without a public location, such as online agencies, apps and web-only stores, use Organization. Our local SEO service covers how the two fit together.
How do I check that my markup is correct?
Test the published page with Google's Rich Results Test for eligibility and the Schema Markup Validator for syntax. Once the page is indexed, the enhancement reports in Google Search Console show errors across the whole site. An SEO audit also confirms that the markup matches what visitors see on the page.
