What UTM parameters are

UTM stands for “Urchin Tracking Module”, a name inherited from the analytics service Google acquired and turned into Google Analytics. In practice they are tags added to the end of a URL, after the ?, that tell Google Analytics where a visitor came from: the source (utm_source: google, newsletter, facebook), the medium (utm_medium: cpc, email, social), the campaign (utm_campaign) and, optionally, utm_term (the keyword), utm_content (the ad variant or link position) and utm_id (the campaign ID). Without them, a click from a newsletter or a social ad can end up in your reports as generic “direct” or “referral” traffic.

How they show up in GA4

In Google Analytics 4 the values appear in the acquisition reports (for example Reports → Acquisition → Traffic acquisition) as session source / medium and session campaign. The medium (together with the source) largely decides which default channel group a session lands in. As a rough guide, cpc or ppc with a search source gives Paid Search, paid_social with a social network gives Paid Social, email gives Email, referral gives Referral and social gives Organic Social. A medium like “offline” or “ad1” usually falls into Unassigned. This is a simplification: Google defines the exact rules in its documentation of default channel groups and may change them, and a custom channel group in your own account can behave differently, so check them under Admin. Data only shows up if the landing page has the GA4 tag installed, and data already collected is not corrected retroactively.

A recommended naming convention

The value of a parameter matters less than consistency. Pick a simple rule and have the whole team stick to it: lowercase, no spaces or accents, with _ or - as the separator.

Common mistakes

  • Inconsistent capitalization. “Facebook” and “facebook” can show up as two different sources in your reports.
  • UTM on internal links. The parameters can overwrite the real source of the visit and break attribution. For buttons and banners on your own site, use GA4 events.
  • An invented medium. If you do not follow the standard values, traffic may land in Unassigned.
  • One link in many places. If the same link is pasted into five channels, you can no longer tell which one drove the clicks. Use one link per channel or placement.
  • Changing a link after it is published. Document every link in a shared sheet or in the tool’s history.

UTM and SEO

UTM parameters are not a ranking factor, but they can create duplicate URLs if the links become indexable. Keep a rel="canonical" tag pointing to the clean version of the page, keep UTM URLs out of your sitemap, and never use them in your site’s navigation or internal links. You do not need UTM for organic traffic: you see it in Google Search Console and in GA4. If you publish advertorials, a UTM on the link to your site measures the traffic the article brings in without changing the landing page.

Personal data and GDPR

A URL ends up in server logs, browser history and Analytics. That is why parameters must not contain personal data: names, email addresses, phone numbers or IDs that identify a person. The Google Analytics terms prohibit sending personally identifiable information. In email campaigns use general values (utm_content=top_button), never the recipient’s address. The tool warns you when a value looks like an email or a phone number.

Why a QR code needs its own UTM

A QR code on a poster, flyer or package points to an ordinary address, and the visits show up in Analytics as direct traffic. A link with its own UTM for each material (qr / offline, campaign, placement) shows you how many scans each one brought. Quiet zone, contrast and size are checked in the “QR code” tab.

Frequently asked questions

UTM link FAQ

Which UTM parameters are required?

For useful reports you generally need utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign; Google’s Campaign URL Builder marks these three as required. utm_id, utm_term and utm_content are optional: the first ties the campaign to the platform’s ID, the second is for keywords in paid ads, and the third tells variants apart. For what to look at in your reports, see our guide to SEO KPIs.

Can I use UTM on links inside my own site?

It is not recommended. An internal link with UTM parameters can overwrite the real source of the visit (for example Google or a newsletter) with the one in the link, and attribution becomes unreliable. To measure clicks on banners or buttons inside your site, use GA4 events.

Do UTMs affect SEO? Can they get indexed?

They are not a ranking factor, but pages with parameters can be crawled and indexed as separate URLs if they end up in public links. Add a rel="canonical" pointing to the clean version, keep UTM URLs out of your sitemap, and do not use them in internal navigation. You can see organic traffic in Google Search Console; it does not need UTM.

Why does my traffic show up as “Unassigned” in GA4?

Usually because the medium or source does not match the default channel group rules, for example a medium such as “offline” or a spelling different from the expected one. Use standard values (cpc, email, social, paid_social, referral, affiliate, display, video) or create a custom channel group. The tool shows, as a rough guide, which channel the link may land in; always check the rules in your own account.

How do I measure a QR code on a printed material?

Build a link with its own UTM for that material (for example source qr, medium offline, with the campaign and placement in utm_content), then make the QR code in the “QR code” tab. Scans show up in GA4 under the campaign you chose. Test the code on at least two phones before printing. For a full measurement strategy you can ask for SEO consulting.
